The project begins with a simple ritual: collecting and reusing vine shoots —the branches pruned from grapevines in winter, in preparation for the new season.
Gathered from nearby wineries, these bundles of discarded wood —usually burned or left to rot— are transformed into building material. The project celebrates these forgotten remnants by constructing a theatrical backdrop at the entrance to Logroño’s old town: Plaza del Revellín. Accumulated into a curved form —both natural and geometric— the vine shoots welcome visitors with a vibrant, inhabitable, and tactile space.
More than 1,200 bundles of vine shoots occupy the square, shaping a resting area, an elevated viewpoint over the street, and a collective table placed between two lines of benches. From the windows overlooking the plaza, anyone can join this central meal, creating a suspended human arena above street level —a convivium.
The vine shoots intertwine within a timber structure 16 meters long and over 4 meters high. Slightly cantilevered, this natural and heterogeneous cladding is composed of 14 vertical modules connected by 6 rows of horizontal reinforcements.
Stacked layer upon layer, the vine shoots allow glimpses of light to filter through, casting shadows on the ground and providing shade within the wooden niche. An oculus at one end frames the stone façades of the surrounding houses.
Its proportions are both generous and intimate: a soft backdrop against the city wall. Once a stage for bull runs and festivities, the square recovers its performative character through a new ritual —the collective use of vine shoots to celebrate a shared barbecue.
